Meet Morgan Applewhite of Some Sugar Some Spice + Melanin Mom Boss
During my Senior year of college I decided that I wanted to graduate with more than just a degree. I wanted to create something that was totally mine, and so my journey into becoming my own boss began.
One day while hanging out with my best friend, I was expressing to her how frustrating it was to find a particular lounge wear outfit that fit my body type. Half jokingly, she encouraged me to create my own company, so I did. Some Sugar Some Spice, LLC was birthed. Once celebrating my graduation from college was over, I jumped into my business head first. However, as life would have it, not only was I birthing my business, I would also be giving birth to a handsome son, as I would soon find out. Although I was excited, the reality of being a recent graduate with high dreams and goals almost immediately set in. I thought, “how am I gonna run a business while juggling being a mother?”. My hunger for entrepreneurship and the consistent encouragement from my support system would not let me get down about it. I decided to blog my way through it and Melanin Mom Boss was born.
Melanin Mom Boss was created as an outlet for me to be able to share my experiences as business owner, mother, and woman. This endeavor has also allowed me to connect with a community of mom bosses who encourage and support each other.
No, as you can imagine there were and are obstacles I face daily. Some of my biggest challenges have been time management and balance. Being a single parent, running a business and still working my 9 to 5,of course one of my biggest struggles is time management. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to do everything but I believe I’ve figured out how to juggle my time efficiently, while also building the knowledge I need to keep my company growing. The key is discipline, consistency, and hard work.
Some Sugar Some Spice is a lounge wear boutique that was created to provide sophisticated women with the ultimate at home experience. We cater to these women by providing luxury clothing that leaves them feeling comfortable yet sexy. In addition to organic body products.
Melanin Mom Boss is a blog/ apparel line that inspires women of color to be comfortable in their own skin. We are breaking the notion that “the sky’s the limit”. By showcasing women who look like us in their prime, we inform them that there are no limits to their talents and their dreams. We encourage and support them in aiming for all of the desires of their heart, while also providing a space that allows them to see another woman who looks like them going through those same obstacles and triumphs with them.
Success to me isn’t defined only by monetary gains. Acquiring Knowledge that can elevate a person to be better than what they are accustomed to has been one of the most valuable lessons that I have learned on this journey. Anyone can have money, but the real proof of success is how the newfound wealth of money and knowledge is being used to build generational wealth. As I get older in age and older in the business of being a CEO, my concept of what I want my life to be, of what I want my kids lives to be, becomes the most important driving force for me. I believe it’s my duty to learn the game, make it my own and teach it to those around me. Success for me will be leaving a legacy for the generation after me to follow and exceed.
