Meet Chef Blāque Shelton of Black Rose Pastries
Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Maurice Shelton, who would late become commonly know as “Chef Blāque”, always had a passion for food and an eye for creativity. Hailing from a diverse background in retail, management and programming, Maurice began exploring his culinary passion in 2006, when he enrolled in Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu School for Baking & Patisserie, building on the influences of his mom and grandmother.
In 2007, he decided to take his passion to the next level and started his bakery, Black Rose Pastries! A skilled baker and sugar artist, Chef Blāque, has traveled the world teaching and training, showcasing his award winning signature style – in over 42 states and 4 countries – blending realism and modern techniques to create show stopping masterpieces.
Since, Chef Blāque, has been features in several publications and media outlets including American Cake Decorating Magazine, The Northwest Indiana Times, The Miami New Times, Something Sweet (UK Based Magazine), Modern Luxury Chicago, and WCIU The Jam just to name a few. Most recently, he and his partner were crowned Season 1 Champions for the Netflix Original Series: Sugar Rush with judges Candace Nelson. Adriano Zumbo, and Betsey Johnson.
Today, Chef Blāque continues to travel the world spreading his passion for sweet treats and confections. He hopes his son Pierre continues to express interest in the craft; and continue making “Simply Delicious Incredible Edibles!” TM.
Where there’s a Whisk, there’s a way!
It has definitely been the road less traveled. Continuing to persevere throughout all of the journey has been one of the most difficult struggles along the way. Often times people see business owners as people who have made it, kinda the tip of the ice berg, when they don’t realize the road to success is a winding never ending road. Having not completed culinary school I had to learn many of the process and techniques on my own. This was difficult starting from scratch while working several other jobs and taking care of my son as a single father. Setting a good example and leaving a legacy for my son propelled me to want to continue doing better. And this is what keeps me motivated.
Black Rose Pastries has been creating Simply Delicious Incredible Edibles in the community using locally sourced high quality ingredients for over 12 years. We focus on creating customized cakes, treats, cookies and confections for your special occasion (birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations and weddings alike). As a community based company, we believe that not only should you have a beautiful piece of edible art but it should also be delicious. We work closely with our clients to bring their visions to life.
To me success means meeting and exceeding your own expectations. While fame and fortune can be considered definite examples of success; true success for me lies in knowing that I was able to instill characteristics , in my son that would afford him opportunities in his future. To be able to be known amongst the households throughout the world bringing joy, memories and Simply Delicious Incredible Edibles would be a true defining point. But most importantly be able to to convey where there’s a whisk, there is a way – there is always a solution and once you shift your mind to focus on solutions you find that the problems begin to melt away.
