Buzz Interviews Jasmine Navarro

I started out wanting to be a lawyer and had my mind dead set on it since middle school. As I started college and gained more interest in my core classes I loved my PR I class. I talked to a law school advisor at my school about switching my major from political science to public relations. I would bring a different skillset to law school. While staying out among my peers. I still interned with a law office and working with a local Congressman campaign. However, looking back at it. I was more interested in their lifestyle. Being their own boss and working directly with their clients. That’s probably when I had it made up in my mind I’m working for myself. I didn’t act upon it til last year. Nevertheless, I started. At the right time might I add during my corporate internship and before the pandemic crushed the job market. Now I help small businesses build on social media and I work for myself.

My journey in LA started back in 1993 (whoa) I came out here from Littleton Colorado with stars in my eyes, and threw my hat into the acting ring. I had a good run up until 2010, when life knocked me on my ass. Coming out on the other side of my struggles, I was gifted a camera from a long time friend. After looking at it in the box for 4 months, I finally worked up the nerve to pick it up and start learning. The past year has been a jam packed course on photography and photoshop. Thank god for the internet!

I graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Psychology and not having a clue about what to do with it. All i knew was I wanted to work with people. I spent a few years in the HR field before having kids and taking time off to raise them. It was during this time I realized that I wanted a small business in which I can pursue my passion but still be able to balance my personal life. For 6 years, I was the owner of a Kumon Math and Reading center in which I helped many students maximize their true potential with their academics. Since then I was doing Tech Recruiting for startups across California. One consistent feedback I received from the software engineers, developers, and programmers I recruited was that they wished there was a coding school around when they were younger. This feedback led me to opening The Coder School – Cerritos/La Palma. I couldn’t be prouder of being the first coding school in a community my family and I call home. I have 2 tech savvy boys who remind me each day the value and importance of technology in our world today and I am thrilled to be able to help young kids everywhere learn to code so that they can change the world!

I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia. I started coaching football after serving as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. I knew coaching was something that I always wanted to do, but I underestimated how much of an impact one could have in this line of work. After the military, I started out coaching the San Diego Surge women’s football team which was very beneficial because it really pushed me to learn more about the game and how to effectively teach. I was fortunate enough from there to meet the right people to be able to get into the high school game.

I started rapping at the age of 12. I was obsessed with the Eminem and G unit movement. As a kid I wanted to be apart of G unit (50 cent’s rap group). I was apart of a rap group called F4 which had myself and 3 other of my childhood friends in it. Things never went through because I decided to pursue basketball. 20 years later, I decided to start rapping again. in just 4 months I have been on Shade 45, worldstarhiphop, and was scheduled to perform at the SXSW festival which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. I just signed a digital distribution deal with The Orchard Sony. The things I have accomplished in 4 months people take years to even touch. I’m very proud of that.

Kema Charles was born in Oak Park, IL and also spent some time living in Pensacola, FL. She was more of an athlete and never considered acting until she took her first acting class in Orlando in 1999. This leap of faith paid off, as she scored her first acting role in 2000 on the acclaimed show “Sheena”.
From there, Kema decided to leave the east coast and try to see if the entertainment business had a place for her. Due to family situations she only stayed in Los Angeles for about two years. While back in Orlando she then went on to work on other projects as well as scoring a role in the movie “Impiety” (with Wreaking Havoc Productions). In 2007 she produced her first film “Jamaican Me Crazy” (with DramaQueen Productions) in Atlanta, GA. At that time she realized that she was not done with Los Angeles, and moved back to the “City of Angels.
In 2009 while producing projects with Phalanx Entertainment she discovered her true destiny and birthed Circle C Entertainment. Under the Circle C Entertainment and Phalanx Entertainment umbrella Kema had the opportunity to direct and produce the music video “Thinking About You” by Raz B (of the Multi-platinum selling group B2K and the hit show “Love and Hip Hop Hollywood”).
Afterwards, the budding entrepreneur took her skillsets to Africa as Director of Operations for a filmmaking program in Abuja, Nigeria. While spending time with the students, she rediscovered her first love in the entertainment world – acting. Upon her return from Africa she landed a role in the stage play “You Reap What You Sow” (a production of Stephanie Singleton).
In 2011, Kema birthed “Lights Camera Discover” (LCD) a non-profit organization that teaches youth teamwork by way of filmmaking and animation. For the past nine years, she has run LCD in four different states. The organization is growing every year and Kema has received numerous awards and recognition on behalf of her tireless work with LCD. Some of these awards are the NBC Channel 12 “Non-profit Spotlight Award” in June 2018, the South by Southwest “Community Service Organization” award in March 2019, a city of “Phoenix Mayor Awards: Innovative Arts Organization” Finalist in October 2019. Recently, she was awarded the “Phoenix Suns Golden Standard” Award Winner in February 2020.

As a Phoenix, native it is my responsible to give back to my community. When I was in the seventh-grade I was exposed to computers. I loved to work on cars with my cousins and working on computers just fell in line with that. I attended the University of Arizona and majored in Management Information System and Operational Management. I have work as an IT professional for 20 years in local government, as well as mentoring youth and serving the community.
I started mentoring youth while in college and continued by coaching high school girls’ basketball for 7 years after graduating from college. While coaching, I noticed that students were not prepare to attend college after high school and that there was a lack of STEM education that was being provided to inner city youth. In 2008 I founded Future Stars, Inc a nonprofit that provides opportunities for inner city youth to achieve their goals of higher education with a focus of sport and technology. Future Stars has provided mentorship of student athlete to prepare them for college to play sports or just attend college. We also host internet safety workshops throughout the community to promote safe usage of computers.
In 2015 we launched the Hands On STEM program in the Faye Gray Recreation Center and the Hands On STEM Fair. The program is a nine month programs that exposes inner city youth to STEM education with activities that are fun, engaging and promotes critical thinking. The Hands On STEM program is currently in two community centers and has approximately 60 students that attend each year. There have been over 900 attendees to the Hands On STEM Fair that takes place the last Saturday in April every year. We will continue to provide STEM education to the South Phoenix community to make sure they know that they are smart enough and can have a STEM career.

I’m a small town girl. I was born and raised in Crystal River, Florida. After graduation, I took a giant leap and moved to the BIG city of Atlanta, Georgia where I attended Morris Brown College. I was an Accounting major and I had every intention of becoming a CPA until I got to my senior year. Somewhere along the way, I lost the love and zeal for Accounting. However, I am a number’s girl, so I didn’t want to veer too far from Accounting. In 1997, after moving back to Florida, I met a friend who referred me to a Brokerage firm. This was the start of my career in Financial Services. I started at the firm as a Customer Service Representative and ended it after 16 years as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. It was an amazing journey and a great company to work for. But after 16 years, I got the “itch” to go out and start my own business. I wanted a business where I could do some of the same work, but serve a different demographic. I wanted to work with more women and minorities. That lead me to where I am today. I am the Founder and President of AMES Financial Solutions. AMES Financial is a virtual comprehensive financial planning firm. I offer a litany of services, including Cash Flow Management, Retirement Planning, and Risk Management, just to name a few. Although, I am the Founder of my firm, I always say it’s a legacy. I call it a legacy because AMES is an acronym for my deceased grandmothers–Ada, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah. I am their legacy and I often share stories about their education and how they handled their finances.

My dad was a home builder so I was on the job site or learning something from him about homes and the way they were built from a very early age. When I was building homes, I loved knowing that every roof I installed or door I hung was all making the American dream possible for someone.

When building slowed during the recession, I was looking at my wife and was wondering what to do. She said why not go back to school and get an Accounting degree. She is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner and accounting had been good to her so it might be good to me. I went back to school got my degree (with the help of an expert tutor – my wife) while working and worked my way up to a position working directly below the CFO. I enjoyed accounting but I missed helping people at a personal level.

As my wife has her own business (Facts Figures Forensics PLLC), I started brainstorming what owning my own business might look like and decided that whatever I did, I was going to base it on four things.

1 – Be a better husband to my wife.
2 – Help Others
3 – See a result
4 – Be my own boss.

I looked into home inspections and new that with my building background, I could really help people make informed decisions when it came to their home. That is when I started Mountain View Home Inspections LLC.
