Buzz Interviews Carlean McWright of KapShaun

In August of 2017, I founded KapShaun /caption/ with my business partner, Jasmine McWright. It is a videography, photography, and editing company, that captures the true essence of its subject through the lens. The company name derived from a family name, “Shaun”. The first half was for creative purposes. I became inspired to start KapShaun after I struggled to get hired locally. At the time, I was a recent graduate from college. I was eager to apply my learnings to the “real” world. Unfortunately, the “world” was not ready for me. Therefore, I found myself unemployed and struggling to make a living.

One day, while I was applying to yet another job. My mother came to me and she asked, “Why not start your own business? You have the skillset to do so”. I pondered for a moment. Honestly, I was very reluctant. However, I knew she was right. I took her advice and we started looking through names. Then it came to life, “KapShaun”.

Growing up in Alabama, going to business school in Alabama (Auburn University) and law school in the State (University of Alabama) provided two certainties for me: 1) I love Alabama and 2) it was definitely time for me to leave! Post law school graduation, I was ready to stretch my legs, leave the nest and try somewhere new. However, that is much easier said than done in the legal community. The pseudo rule of thumb surrounding law schools is that you should attend a school in the location you want to practice. There are many reasons that go into this thinking, but most importantly is the reality that you are much more likely to find a job in the location of your school. Well, out of state job prospects for an unlicensed fresh law school graduate are bleak. And this bleakness weighs heavier when you need to eat and begin tackling those unbearable student loans. Nevertheless, I was optimistic, undeterred and certain I was leaving home. In hindsight, even more than naivety, I believe I was optimistic for a reason. I have always felt that no matter what statistics or “rule of thumbs” tell me, if I am able to sit across from another human being, I would give myself a good shot at landing the job. With that belief, I intensely studied locations across the country that I wanted to be in, industries I wanted to work in, and how I saw my life unfolding 5 years down the road. After numerous interviews, sleepless nights and city tours, I landed in Dallas, TX.

I moved to Dallas in June 2013, my wife came a few months later, and we have never looked back. We fell in love with the melting pot, sports teams, personalities and the food. Dallas allows us to be who we are and truly feels like home. Alongside our social enjoyment of Dallas, my career was right where I wanted it. I got hired in the employee benefits department of a Fortune 20 company working on benefit related lawsuits concerning our employees. Being able to work with senior attorneys and responding to court’s requests for records really lit a spark inside of me. The day-to-day at a job is about as good as a day-to-day can be, but what really intrigued me about employee benefits is the understanding of the magnitude of the subject matter. Employee Benefits directly impacts hundreds of thousands of our employees and their families, and millions of employees of other companies across the nation. Just think for a second, when someone is telling you about their new job, their benefits package usually rolls off their tongue right after location and salary (i.e. “my 401k match…” “my medical premium…” “we have a dental plan that…”). Getting this first introduction into the field coupled with my interest has allowed me to move up the ranks from leading company-wide projects to my current work in the Governance department, where we navigate health and welfare plan drafting, collective bargaining agreements and mergers and acquisitions.

In conjunction to building a career at my “9 to 5” I have become a licensed attorney in Texas, Minnesota, North Dakota and the District of Columbia. I have leveraged my practical, scholastic and professional experiences to secure an adjunct professor position teaching Employee Benefits and ERISA Litigation at a premier law school in Dallas, as well as, founding a business focused on investing and consulting, Jared Miller Ventures, LLC. I have a long way to go and I am nowhere near a finished product, but it satisfying to know that you can be whatever you strive to be in life. Although your plan might not look exactly like you would want, you will eventually get where you need to go.

I started writing and freestyling music at the age of 13 in middle school. Music has always been in my family blood. I had the passion back then and only with a little bit of college experience I found myself going as perusing it after high school. That’s when I took my first trip to the tristate region and found myself over with Wu-Tang management by 19 years old. I’ve made noise locally but for me that’s what I felt was my first step up and growth as an artist. All the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico I found myself even closer than before and it was real.

Since I was very young, all I wanted was to be in music. My parents told me I was humming tunes as a baby before I could even speak. When I was 6 or 7, I started writing poetry and short stories, which then lead me to songwriting. At the age of 10, I started taking piano lessons and at 15 or 16, I started learning guitar. I won my first singing competition at 14 performing “One Day” by Simple Plan and that was when I knew I wanted to become a professional singer. My cousin introduced me to Green Day’s music and when I heard their “American Idiot” album, I then realized I wanted to be a rock singer.

In 2011, I recorded my first self-titled EP “Sabrina Fallah” with producer Stuart Epps in England, which was released April 1th, 2012. I later on worked with producer Chris Birkett in Toronto and recorded a few songs, which two of them have been released, “The Frontline” and “Everything”. In February 2016, I had the opportunity to go to Nashville where I co-wrote new songs and recorded my music with producer Kent Wells.

In January 2019, I released my compilation CD “Sabrina Fallah” with a bonus new track called “Everything” with my label Dance Plant Records distributed by The Orchard on iTunes. The tracks on it are “All or Nothing”, “One Chance”, “Break Through”, “Ask”, “Sorry”, “The Frontline”, “Kiss Is a Killer”, “Stuck Up”, “Didn’t Last”, “Paradise Comes With a Price”, “Hurt”, and “Everything”.

After a whole year trying to get my music on mainstream radios, I finally achieved my goal. In November 2019, Ron Carson on WSBS Radio (860 AM and 94.1 FM) interviewed me and played two of my songs, “The Frontline” and “Hurt” live on air. He also wrote a beautiful blog post about me the night before the interview.

A few months after this interview, Ron aired it again and that was when the listeners started calling into the station to request my songs. This helped me a lot, because I needed one person to take a chance on me and Ron believed in me and gave me that opportunity. After that, I have been getting featured and in rotation on mainstream radio stations in Canada, the United States and Brazil.

I have also been interviewed and played on online stations and college radios worldwide.

My love of acting began in the 4th grade. I auditioned for a school play and won a fun comedic role playing a disheveled and kooky female school teacher. I was really surprised by all the amazing comments I received after the performance. I had a lot of fun doing that play and it’s really nice when you enjoy doing something and other people enjoy it too. It was after that play that I thought acting might be something to pursue. My mother signed me up for some acting classes and I have continued performing in schools plays. It was all so much fun that I decided I would start auditioning for more professional opportunities, but I needed headshots. Someone who lives in my apartment building is a famous headshot photographer who has taken photos of the most famous actors in the world. He took some headshots of me and I started getting background work for television shows. Those onset experiences led me to student films and then short films. Last December I signed with an agent in New York City and this month I found out that I was nominated for a Young Entertainer Award for Best Young Actor in one of the short films.

My mother filled my world with music and the arts when I was a kid. Symphonic music. Classical music. Broadway music. I did my first show (“The Music Man”) when I was five years old and I was completely hooked. I never stopped and I’m 35 years old now.

I started singing when I was about 3 years old. The first time I sang was at my dad’s church during a Saturday night musical. As I got older, I became more comfortable and sang a lot more. Whether it was outside in the front yard on a Saturday morning, Walmart, or in church. Once I got to middle school, I got into the school choir and began competing. I continued doing that throughout high school, and was awarded with a scholarship from Stephen F. Austin State University. After a year in college, I withdrew, went to a community college, and started at Head Start. While working, I competed in several shows, and landed a job at a church in Houston, TX. I started posting videos every Sunday from church, and I started getting responses. From there, I created an Instagram account and posted short clips, just enough to keep people interested to stick around for the next one. In 2018, after doing that for about 6 months, I got my first viral video which reached close to 2 million views. It’s been uphill from there! I’ve had the opportunity to work with gospel legend, John P. Kee. Grammy award winning singer, Monica. And my latest success was winning the “Race To The Blue” competition with Terrell Grice. Which landed me on my first album, An Invitation To The Cookout.

Well growing up in a family where my mother is a nurse and my father is a fireman, I thought I was destined to be a civil servant. Up until about 10 years ago, I wanted to follow in my fathers footsteps and then I got the bug..the acting bug as they call it. As a kid, I looked at acting as a profession that was unattainable. I always thought that it was reserved for people who were born into it. While I figured out what I wanted to do with my life, I took up acting as a hobby. I would submit to local casting calls here in the city, literally anything and everything just to have the opportunity to get onto a set. In this time, I was fortunate to land an agent to help me with castings as I was not having any luck on my own. Lucky for me this agent of mine landed me a role on the set of The Dark Knight Rises. As many of you know, it is part of the Batman saga. Although it was just a background role or “Extra”, it was during this time on set that I realized my passion for acting and desire to become an actor.

Born in Maryland, raised in Rialto, California and moved to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta University as a Speech Communication major graduate. I met my now-husband (Aaron Corley) and was anxious and ready for my future. However, I was not ready for the life-changing event of losing my mother-Joy to breast cancer in 2010, it took a toll on my life and made me scared. I was scared that I would change who I was because of losing my mother, so I prayed, prayed that God keeps me and give me the strength to get through this hard time. And, I did, my first job was in a childcare center where I enjoyed working with the children because I always had a passion and love for kids.

After leaving the childcare to pursue other career opportunities, I worked at a non-profit in inner-city Atlanta as an Academic Coach for 2nd graders. That experience changed my life, it really humbled me and made me realize how blessed and fortunate I was. I then got into adult education and worked at universities and colleges as an Academic Advisor, Success coach, Learning Resource Center Manager, and an Enrollment Representative. It was not until I gave birth my daughter (Tylan) when I realized how critical the early education stage was to a child’s life. This is when I realized I wanted to get back into childcare, but not only work in the early childhood education field but ultimately own my own childcare center.

I started with my traveling childcare services for big and small events called, The Joy of Learning Academy. This service is needed and caters to weddings, bridal showers, adult parties, teen parties, company events, and even babysitting. I simply come to your wedding, take all of the children at the facility and watch them on site. This allows for grandma or auntie to enjoy the special day worry-free. September 3, 2019, I opened my physical childcare location with my business partner (Angela Grant) called Prepping for Excellence Academy- “We make sure your scholar is prepped for excellence” and is located at 677 Old Alabama Road, Mableton, GA, 30126.

He and his family moved from Michigan to Atlanta, GA in 2010. This is where Remarcus started to produce his music under the name of “Young Lyrical Dread” in 2014 he changed his name to “Vigilante”. The same year he graduated from SAE Institute of Technology. In 2015, he signed to write a song for the Children’s Cancer Association. In 2015, he met actor Trevor Jackson on the movie set of “Sons to the Grave” it was then Remarcus caught the acting bug. It was not long and he had booked the movie “Barbershop 3”, “Alvin and the Chipmunks 4”. Since he has booked many other roles on TV Series like “Saved by the City”, “Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda”, “For My Man”, and “Fatal Attraction”. Currently, Remarcus has “21 Questions: and “Call Time” in production. Remarcus still produces his own music his first Album will be released later on this year.
