Meet Allison Hewett of New Heights Counseling
As a child I struggled with insecurities and major social anxiety. I never saw a counselor for my problems because I was really good at hiding them. My parents didn’t even know how much I struggled. Luckily, as time went on, I overcame the insecurity and social anxiety by working on my thought life. At the time, I was performing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on myself without actually knowing it. The whole premise behind CBT is learning how to control your thinking which helps to control your behaviors and emotions.
Fast forward. I never intended to become a counselor. It sort of just happened. After learning that roughly 40 million adults in the United States suffer from an Anxiety Disorder, I knew that I needed to help. After all, I had firsthand experience in overcoming anxiety.
In 2017, New Heights Counseling LLC. was born. Today, we have two locations (Plano/Frisco & Coppell) and 5 therapists. We specialize in Anxiety and Depression. We help children, teens, and adults.
When I overcame my anxiety, it felt like chains had fallen off. I was finally free and didn’t have to worry any more. My hope and prayer is that every client who comes to New Heights Counseling will experience that same feeling.
Definitely not! Hello COVID-19!
As a counselor who is also a business owner, I have realized that worrying and fretting about the ups and downs of the business is not helpful. Any entrepreneurs out there? What I have learned is to take things one day at a time. It’s kind of like life. Some days are good and some days are bad. When there are bad days, you can’t throw in the towel and give up. You have to pick yourself up and keep moving forward.
Having a calm mindset has also helped when making big business decisions. For instance, when COVID-19 struck, we had to decide whether we would stay in the office seeing clients, go online, stop taking clients, keep taking clients. There were a million decisions to make. We tried to make the best decisions for our team and, so far, we’ve been making it. We are not through this season yet, but we will learn and continue on.
New Heights Counseling LLC. is a counseling private practice. We primarily specialize in Anxiety and Depression. However, with our team of 5 therapists, each person on our team has other specialties aside from Anxiety and Depression. Some of those specialties include: trauma, eating disorders, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, ADHD, couples counseling and more. Because we are so passionate about Anxiety and Depression, we require every one of our therapists to be proficient in the two.
As the business owner, the thing I am most proud of is our team. They are down-to-earth, fun, caring, and knowledgable. And the results speak for themselves! It’s hard to schedule a session with any of them because they each have built a following with their clients. I believe you can tell a good therapist by how often their clients refer their friends. That’s what’s happened here. They are the best counselors!
The pinnacle of success for me is to love what I do, make enough to pay expenses, employees, and myself. Anything extra is a cherry on top.
Can I tell you something?…I’ve reached success.
Now, I don’t say that in a way to toot my own horn. My level of success might be a lot less than someone else’s level of success. Maybe part of the reason I’ve reached success is because I’ve learned to be content with what I have. I already have a wonderful family, a roof over our heads, and food on the table. Anything else is a cherry on top!
As for New Heights Counseling, we are going to keep growing. We plan to have 2 more locations by the end of 2020. We are excited for what the future holds.
