Meet Amaka Ofomata of Meals By Maki
It all started when I was an undergrad at California State University, East Bay. My roommate Meghna and I were in our living room doing homework one evening. She was expressing to me how she wished that she had enough time during the day to cook meals for herself because she was a full-time student, was in a sorority, and she wanted to have a healthier diet.
So I suggested to her, what if you paid me weekly and I would cook for you so you can have time to study and worry about other things that were going on in her life. I never thought to turn it into a meal prep business, but she was the one who encouraged me to turn it into a business because there was also many students I knew at the time that would’ve been able to benefit from this service!
So when I kicked off my meal prep business in college, it was such a blessing. I was getting orders from left to right. From students, athletes, and my friend’s parents! I wanted to see how my food business can even expand more beyond just meal prepping, so I had an idea to feed the homeless, except that I didn’t have enough money to buy food. So this group on campus, called Black Campus Ministries were so gracious enough to host a potluck and asked for cash/food donations! We ended up going out to Oakland twice and fed the homeless and prayed for them.
Moving back to LA after graduation, I would say has been a bit of a struggle. It was a bit of a struggle finding clients. I have found some, but other than that it has been slow. But I know God is going to open that path for me again!
Meals by Maki not only does meal prepping, but I also specialize in catering, at home services, and feeding the people on the streets! I also specialize in diet planning and food education. I am so proud that I have been doing this for over two years now and how much recipes I have learned along the way. What sets me apart from others is that I take the time to do research about each ingredient I am putting together. I give my clients tips on what is in their food and the health benefits alongside that. I am also very affordable too, haha.
Success for me is defined as stepping into and living the purpose that God has already planned for our lives. When we have a passion in our heart to do something, I strongly do believe that we will succeed in it.
