Meet CrystalTheDJ of Yamagucci HQ
I started as a costume designer, actually. I graduated from San Diego State University with my Bachelors of Art, and during school, I went to lots of parties. I loved how much fun they were. Somehow I came across Vashtie Kola, a female DJ, director, and designer, a true Renaissance woman. When I saw that she could do all of those things, I realized that I could too. I didn’t have the resources I needed to really be a DJ so it was a slow start, I would practice on apps via my iPad. Then I met a DJ who was kind of hitting on me, so I asked him to show me how to DJ – completely ignoring the fact that he was into me. I would drive from LA to Pomona a few times out of the week (that’s where he went to school), lug his equipment from his car to his room where there was NO ELEVATOR, and I would practice DJ’ing. Until I was able to purchase my own computer and equipment, I would use my HUGE iMac for events, etc. Basically, I loved it so much, I didn’t care what I had to use to make it work, I just did it.
It hasnt been the smoothest road I would say. But, if things were easy, it wouldn’t be worth it at all. For example, when I started DJ’ing at VLIVE LA, a strip club, my style of dj’ing did not match the style that the owner wanted at his club. I was coming from doing parties and nightclub scenes, not a strip club. Even when I practiced dj’ing for an hour each night at Starz (another strip club), it didn’t 100% prepare me for the fast paced environment that my new club residency required. If I didn’t step my game up, and fast, I would not be asked to continue to work at the club. It didn’t help that I would see the owner and feel ALL the pressure to impress him when he would come in while I was spinning. I finally asked him straight up, “How can I make you happy? How can I be a better DJ in your club?”. He told me, I took heed, and I ended up dj’ing for some of the biggest stars that walked in the building! My favorite nights were when I dj’d for Megan Thee Stallion, Saweetie, and The Migos. Without pressure, how are diamonds made??
I am the owner and operator of YAMAGUCCI HQ. Yamagucci houses my Media company, clothing company, and smaller subsidiaries, like “CrystalTheDJ”. I also am the COO of West Angels, a casting agency for beautiful models and dancers.
I am most proud of my vision for my entire company. I have been able to DJ for some big names, and the fact that this is only the beginning makes me excited to see what’s to come in the future.
What sets my business apart from others is the fact that it is not just one function. You’ll see the major things me and my business are capable of in the future. Think on the scale of Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Rihanna.
I define success by the little victories everyday. I set my goals, no matter how small, and every time I reach a new goal, I celebrate myself. It keeps me going. I don’t determine my success based off of how much money I’ve made because money comes and goes with business.
One thing I’ve promised myself is that I will do 90% of the ideas that come to my mind, and every time I do, I see it as a success. That alone drives me closer to my bigger vision, which ultimately leads to total satisfaction because “I did it”.
