Meet Ryne Williams of Styles Of Houston
After graduating college in 2016, I came back home to Houston, Texas, and scrolled through Instagram. Already having a deep passion for photography and fashion, I noticed a lot of European men who were full-time fashion bloggers. I thought, why not bring that to Houston.
Of course, understanding that you have to stand out and do something different to be noticed, I would dress up and make style videos with my voice over the videos, telling people about my outfit. People loved the videos, but I realized that I could use this same concept but branch it out to something way bigger than myself. Branch it out to an entire city, my city, Houston, Texas.
I’m a people’s person, so naturally, the idea of merging my passions for fashion and photography, while integrating these style videos of my fellow Houstonian’s would come easy. It surely has come easy, seeing my fellow Houstonians fully engaged in the fashion project I have created called Styles Of Houston. There is no looking back as this fashion project is steadily growing and providing the world with something new, a project that uniquely documents a city’s entire style, using real-world people.
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. Whenever you start a project or business, it’s all about making mistakes early and learning from them. Trusting the process and staying positive is what has made this been a smooth road, along with all of the amazing people who support the project. When you have amazing supporters, it definitely makes things easy. The main struggle along the way is testing different methods to find out what people engage with more. In the beginning, I would take photos of a fashionable Houstonian and transcribe how they felt about fashion through typing on a website. Over time, people wanted something more engaging, so adding videography was a huge move for the project. Then, upgrading camera equipment while adding a website helped tremendously. Now, many people request to be apart of the project, as when I started, I had to reach out to many people. The struggle to find out what people reacted to better took time, but it’s an amazing feeling to see the growth over time and how smooth the road is now.
Styles of Houston is a project that showcases to the world how the amazing city of Houston dresses. Houston is one of the most diverse cities in this country and with diversity comes different people and different cultures. Having many different people and cultures results in having many different style choices. Styles of Houston serves to document these styles in a creative and unique way.
I feature fashionable Houstonians around the city, by meeting with them in a nice place around the city. I record their articles of clothing and take a photoshoot of the subject. I later ask the subject two questions pertaining to fashion, such as “What does your fashion consist of?” or “Why is style important to you?”
The subject answers these questions in a voice memo, sends it to me, and I add the answers, video clips, and photos into a video episode. In this manner, you get to watch an engaging video of the subject, what they are wearing, you hear their take on fashion, all the while getting an understanding of the person and why they love fashion.
I’m mostly proud at the growth and the support that Styles of Houston has. For there to be hundreds and hundreds of people who love what I am doing, consistently tuning in to the project is amazing. People that I know and people that I have never met, truly believe in the project and give great feedback, thinking that this project will be something big. I’m proud to have so many people believing in the project, Styles of Houston.
What sets me apart is the fact that I am for the people. I am for the entire city of Houston. Each and every Houstonian can be apart of the project because this is about our city. Furthermore, I feel that I have created a project that has its own lane. I am not aware of a project in any city of this country, that documents their city’s style in such a unique way as I have been doing, involving real world people. People who are in college or work “9-5” jobs. There are so many people who love fashion, yet do not have the same platform as celebrities to showcase their style to a bigger audience. Yet, Styles of Houston serves to showcase each and everyone’s style. I feel this sets Styles of Houston apart from others.
Success, for me, will always be about inspiring others to chase the things that they truly love. You never know where that could take you. If I know that at the end of the day my work has helped someone to fearlessly go after what they love and it makes them happier, then I can sleep well at night, because happiness is true success.
