Meet Shereen Thor of Awaken The Rebel
Long story short, I was a disgruntled cubicle monkey who followed the rules believing they would make me happy. Spoiler alert: They did not.
Realizing that white picket fences are sometimes made of B.S., my inner rebel got woke, broke out of the 9-5, and became a stand-up comic/entrepreneur. Finally, living my truth was addicting – until I went into debt, got burnt out, and fell into a depression. That’s the thing about life. It’s not a straight shot to the top. Even when you’re “following your bliss.”
Along the way, I met and fell in love with my now-husband. Our relationship helped me identify, work through, and recover from some deep-rooted codependency issues as we built a life and family of our own. While I initially resisted the pull of motherhood, embracing it and accepting that I needed some support turned out to be the medicine I needed.
Today, I’m living a life that not only honors my soul but makes me damn happy and fulfilled. And while it took massive debt, two high-risk pregnancies, a hospitalization, and postpartum depression to wake my ass up, I eventually slayed my dragons and wrote my own rulebook. Now I work as a coach helping other women slay their own dragons to wake up their inner rebel and live life on their terms.
Absolutely not! Even after I decided to follow my dreams, things were still a struggle. I had to learn how to let go of my codependency issues that arose from the death of my father and being raised by my single immigrant mother. And that didn’t happen overnight. I had to go into debt, completely burn out and go through two high-risk pregnancies before I finally learned that I didn’t have to do everything and that it was safe to trust other people.
Being a stand-up comic also came with some struggles of its own. I had to learn to live with and power through the voices that told me I wasn’t good enough or deserving of what I wanted. Rewriting my old programming is really what helped me succeed.
Awaken The Rebel is my executive coaching business, where I guide other women to rock their gifts and design a life they love. I do that through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, in-person retreats (pre-COVID), and my podcast, Awaken The Rebel. I’m also working on a book to help women who can’t yet afford to hire a coach.
I’m most proud of the accomplishments my clients have made. It’s been a humbling experience to watch them take the reigns and step into their destined roles as revolutionary women. What sets me apart as a coach is my ability to see through all the B.S. and help my clients come up with direct steps that get them closer to making their dreams a reality.
I define success as living an intentional life. I believe we’re all put here on the planet for a reason, and when we uncover what that reason is — by peeling back the layers of old programming and limiting beliefs — our lives become more fulfilling.
Success isn’t defined by money, marriage, or material objects. It’s defined by how proud you are of the life you’re living.
